ALIENOCULARIS – The Silk Spinner Flower

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

Looking very much like the creation of a Paris fashion designer, the Silk Spinner is an intriguing organism that exobotanists still don’t understand much about. The complex, multi-chambered structure inside a dissected Silk Spinner begins to decay at a rapid rate as soon as the plant is cut from its roots. However, we do know that it is a carnivorous plant that lures and captures certain types of insects of its home planet and reprograms them to work inside the flower. The tendril-like stem fibres also have a tendency to snake around a body part and constrict with a force we haven’t yet been able to counter. Seven exobotanists have been strangled to death and three have lost fingers and hands to the gangrenous strength of this horrifyingly beautiful flower.

ALIENOCULARIS – The Air Bubble Vaccuum Plant

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

Certainly one of the more baffling alien plants, the Air Bubble Vacuum hermetically seals its self-pollinating flowers because they cannot survive without the carefully crafted force field. To keep the flowers alive, the Air Bubble Vacuum sucks air from alternate realities where the flowers do survive using the vertebrae-like quantum phase discs that make up the trunk of the plant. Unfortunately, in those realities, the air that keeps them healthy will also kill us. If you somehow manage to penetrate the forcefield, your body will spaghettify like it would inside a black hole. The process is extremely messy.

ALIENOCULARIS – The Steampunk Stethoscope Plant

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

Did you know that the stethoscope was originally invented to protect women’s modesty when male doctors checked their heart rates?

But the Steampunk Stethoscope was not designed to protect anything! This rare floating plant traps radioactive electrical anomalies in the atmosphere and siphons power from them for sustenance. The power then passes through the arteries of the plant, filtering through several biological checkpoints (not unlike our livers and kidneys) removing impurities. The source power then passes into the stomach of the plant—a chamber of lava-like acid—to extract the nutrients it needs. The dark, sticky resin that is left then drips down to nourish the ground beneath the plant. This resin is highly unstable and can detonate upon contact with a living thing, leaving a burning goop that is harder to extinguish than Napalm.

ALIENOCULARIS – The Fancy Feather Duster Plant

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

If a French Vogue supermodel, Louis Comfort Tiffany and a Beefeater Guard spliced their DNA together, the result would be this. Alluringly intricate and delicate, the Fancy Feather Duster releases deadly spores into the air that smell like Chanel No. 5 and its wing-like leaves disintegrate on touch, leaving a highly corrosive residue that eats through flesh and bone in minutes. Look but don’t touch!

ALIENOCULARIS – The Fungus Tree

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

The Fungus Tree has a large brain inside the lobe atop the trunk. Rather than having a negative physiological effect, the Fungus Tree protects itself psychically. The many sprouting eyes lock on to you as you approach and fill you with such extreme apathy that you simply forget to eat, sleep and move, withering away to death as you kneel at its feet.

ALIENOCULARIS – Restricted Point Of View

The Alienocularis Series illustrates and describes the bizarre, beautiful and frightening plant life found on the Alienocularis home world.

Restricted Point Of View is the artwork that truly started the Alienocularis series. Initially, the idea for Alienocularis came from the doodles I draw when I’m talking on the phone. I’m not thinking about what I’m doing so whatever lands on the paper comes straight from my subconscious. The Alienocularis doodles were just doodles until a charity group exhibition came along that I was invited to join. The charity was to support cancer research and the brief was to create a piece inspired by a given set of scientific microscope slides. When I saw the list of inspirational microscope slides, I immediately focused on a slide that showed the capillary patterns in a rat’s eyeball. It looked like some weird alien cage. This immediately gave me the idea to create Restricted Point of View, symbolic of the prejudices and ignorance that plague human existence and cage us in.
